taking these few days of hospital attachment to decide whether i'm inspired enough to take up Medicine in NUS might not be a very good idea after all.

today at TTSH, i witnessed an obvious definition between healthcare providers, categorised into two groups, namely medical officers and in the other, everyone else; DESPITE the supposed common goal everyone should be seeking to achieve: to provide unbiased medical attention to anyone who needs it.

in an example, why a doctor is authorised to shout at nurses (and NYP attachees) while they are in the process of organising patient trolleys neatly in the congested consultation room (simply because at that particular instant, the trolley is in the middle of the walkway) is beyond me.

and in that outrage, he maneuvers a patient with suspected spinal injury in double-quick time (probably in a bid to uphold the elitist standards) and immediately crashes the trolley head-on with another trolley containing an old lady taking vital signs, causing the spinal patient to suffer yet another deceleration injury and burstforth an outcry of pain.

conversely, in the underpaid and less glamorous, female-dominated environment of nursing, things may have ran less smoothly due to the deluge of patients entering the A&E during lunch hour, but the cheerfulness they radiated in such a sterile environment was positively invigorating.

this is definitely not the first time i'm inspired by a nurse to be a doctor.

RESPECT goes out to paramedics and nurses who put the care in healthcare in treating and managing patients instead of merely the disease/injury.

paramedics are severely underrated for their commitment in saving lives; we never realise the knowledge and responsibility they burden themselves with each time they attend to an uncertain call. the honour they receive should best even that of doctors. and nurses, are all heart. 'nuff said :)
